It had been a long day at school and practice. Jared flopped down on the living room sofa with a sigh, and glanced around the room. Seeing no sign of his boyfriend was no indication that Amos wasn't around somewhere, but Jared decided to take the risk anyway. He lifted a foot in an attempt to place it on the nearby table.

It was in that moment that Amos chose to make an appearance in the doorway from the kitchen brandishing a tray with two mugs on it. Jared quickly put his boots back on the floor.

"I can see you from the kitchen, Red," he muttered as he approached and placed the tray on the table.

"It's not that hard to understand. Coffee tables are for coffees. Footrests are for feet. It's right in the name."

Amos sat beside him and patted his own lap. Jared chuckled and swung his feet up, resting his back against armrest.

"Better." Amos nodded his approval and set about relieving Jared of his shoes.

"Mmmm, you're right. Better," Jared agreed. He closed his eyes for a moment to enjoy Amos' hands on his tired feet. His attention eventually flickered to the tray on the table.

"What's this?" He reached over and grabbed a mug. "According to your logic, it's coffee, right?"

"Hot chocolate actually," Amos replied.

"But...But..." Jared regarded him in mock horror. "It's not a 'Hot Chocolate Table'!"

"Oh, shut-up!" Amos punctuated his statement by squeezing Jared's pinky toe.

Jared squealed and twisted away, back into an upright position where he started to giggle into his mug.

Oh, really? You're making fun of me now?" Amos gave him an indignant look.

"Well, you said..."

"Oh, okay." Amos nodded his head. Grinning, he reached into an end table drawer and pulled out a sketch pad and a pencil.

Jared couldn’t help but smile at Amos’ uncanny ability to unearth a sketchpad and pencil at any given moment in any location under almost any circumstance.

"Is THAT how you're going to play it?” Amos said. “Because I'll design you a hot chocolate table right here."

"You are so ridiculous," Jared said, laughing.

"Mmmm, That's why you love me," Amos said as he concentrated on the paper in front of him. "Right?"

"Yes, I love you," Jared replied. "So..."

He scooted closer to Amos on the couch and peered over his shoulder.

"Interesting," He said.

"What?"

"I thought it would be more...table...ish," Jared replied. "It's kind of a skinny thing."

"Right. Because it goes next to chair there." Amos gestured toward a slim spot between the chair and one of the side tables that buffered the sofa.

"See how it follows the edge of the chair?"

"Okay. And what's that?" Jared pointed at a spot on the drawing. Amos curled up next to him, making himself comfortable at Jared's side.

"That is the covered cooler compartment. Y'know, for the marshmallows and chocolate shavings and gummy bears and such."

"You put gummy bears in your hot chocolate?"

"Don't question my eating habits," Amos chided him. "You dip french fries in chocolate shakes."

"Okay. Fair Point."

"Now this is the best part!" Amos said. "This right here is the spring loaded cooling compartment for the whipped cream!"

"Why is it spring loaded?"

"So you don't have to bend over and open a side cooler. You just press a button and it pops up, and you push it back in when you're finished."

"Interesting." Jared pointed at the last unaddressed mark on the illustration. He didn't have to ask.

"That's the warming plate built in coaster. To keep the mug warm," Amos replied.

"That seems kind of dangerous," Jared said. "What if you put your hand on it or something? It's right at hand - slash- arm rest height."

"We can put some kind of guard around it. Oh! It can protect you from burns and hold the mug in place at the same time! I'll work out the kinks later."

Amos straightened up to retrieve his own cup of hot chocolate from the tray on the coffee table. He stirred in the whip cream with the spoon in the cup, and took a sip.

"So you're actually going to build this thing," Jared said after a moments pause to sip from his own mug.

"Right." Amos nodded. "Don't mock me and expect to get away with it!"

"I have learned my lesson." Jared grinned into his mug.

"Good." Amos gave him what he thought was a definitive nod, but Jared was intent on having the last word.

"Or maybe it's all part of the master plan."

"Master plan? This I have to hear." Amos tried his best to keep from rolling his eyes.

"Yeah," Jared said. "Maybe, I'm just trying to get you to build me lots of unique furniture for, er... extremely specific use. Next up: shaving sink."

Amos sat up straight, opened his mouth and raised his hand as if to make a point, but quickly deflated and sank back against Jared's chest.

"You are devious," he said.

"I know you can't resist the call of the wood shop and trying to prove a point."

Jared put an arm around Amos and hugged him close. He lofted his mug with his free hand.

"Cheers, Kiddo," he said.

Their mugs met with a soft clink.

"Cheers," Amos murmured in return.

They sat there for a moment, enjoying each other's company and the warmth of their sweet chocolaty beverages until Amos felt it was time to break the comfortable silence.

"You know what, Red," he said.

"Hmmmm?"

"You can put your feet on the table if you want to."
