Jared couldn’t help but be nervous. It was his first with Amos. Everything that had come before that day only felt like a haze to him. He was lucky that he had been forgiven for any of that at all. He wanted to make it right, and that meant letting Amos take him out to a place of his choosing.

That meant the Legion of Honor.

Art museums weren’t necessarily Jared’s idea of a good time, but to his credit, being with Amos had made it a more interesting day than he had been expecting. Amos had been happy to jump from painting to sculpture to painting, talking about each one like an enthusiastic puppy eventually gathering a small trail of curious onlookers around them with his rather loud exuberance. Jared couldn’t help but feel amused and proud of him at the same time.

They eventually ended up at the Palace of fine arts in the early evening, because Amos said he had always wanted to stand under the dome with a boy at sunset.

“So, is it everything you thought it would be?” Jared asked him as they looked out over the lagoon.

“Yeah. It’s pretty,” Amos said. “Only one thing would make it better.”

He didn’t wait for Jared to respond. He reached out instead and grabbed hold of his hands, wrapping Jared’s arms around his waist and leaning up against him. Jared halted slightly at the overt public display of affection. He wasn’t used to it. Not with Amos.

He wanted to be, though, so he held on tightly when Amos tried to pull away.

“No.” He murmured, and kissed the top of Amos’ head. “This is nice. It is better. You’re right.”

Amos sighed contentedly and snuggled up closer, his eyes closed.

“You know you owe me now,” Jared said after a moment of silence.

Amos looked quizzically up at him.

“Yeah,” Jared replied with a smile. “I just spent an entire day looking at art stuff with you. I’m totally taking you to Cooperstown for our honeymoon.”

Amos did manage to pry himself away from Jared’s grasp in order to stare incredulously up at him.

“What?” Jared said. “You like baseball, and you really, really like museums. Don’t pretend like you don’t.”

“Nonono,” Amos replied. “Not that. That might be fun, but...”

Jared silently prompted him to continue by arching his eyebrows at him.

“You want to marry me?”

“Uh...” Jared felt crushed under the weight of Amos’ expectant and slightly worried stare. He looked shyly down at his feet before responding.

“Not right now. Can we even do that? I mean, we should probably finish school right? I don’t, I mean...I’m not, like...proposing... I don’t have a ring or nothing. It just kind of slipped out.”

“We should probably finish this date first, actually,” Amos replied. “We have a dinner reservation, remember?”

Jared finally looked up at him and saw that he was biting his knuckle, trying his best not to burst out laughing at the awkwardness of the situation. Jared chuckled at himself then reached out and pulled Amos into a rough hug, ruffling up his hair when he started to giggle uncontrollably into Jared’s chest.

“I love you,” Jared whispered in his ear. “Do you believe me now?”

“Yeah,” Amos replied. He rested his head upon Jared’s shoulder and sighed contentedly. “I’m probably a fool for it, but I always believed you.”
