Axel watched him curiously out of the corner of his eye from the vantage point of his desk. His roommate was staring out the window into a sky covered with clouds. It was always raining on the small planet that headquartered the Inter-Galactic Action Squad. The days were long and the sun too far away to provide much warmth. It was a place remote and inhospitable, which was just how the powers that be liked it.

Ehren sighed loudly and pulled open the drawer of his own desk. He removed the small crate he kept there; sent by his mother like clockwork on the first of every month. He cracked open the container and pulled out a small fruit before carefully placing the box back in its hiding place. He took the fruit in hand and bit into the purple flesh as he resumed his vigil at the window; purple juice dribbled down his chin, which he wiped away with the sleeve of his I-GAS issued sleeping garment.

"Why do you eat those all the time?" Axel finally asked him. He turned fully in his seat so when Ehren turned to address him, they were facing each other. "You're the only Earthian I've ever met who eats those things like... Iguana and Beetroot."

"Iguana and Beetroot?" Ehren regarded Axel curiously. "That's a daily meal on Planet X? Iguana?"

"That's the word, right? It's like a...like a...I'm sorry. I don't know the Standard word for it. Scaly? Monster Dragons? They're everywhere; in the street, in the trees, underground."

"Yeah, yeah." Ehren finally managed a smile. "You have the right enough word. It's okay."

Axel nodded and looked pleased with himself. He stood to join Ehren at the window. They both stared out at the dreary landscape. The entire world seemed grey, from the sky down to the sodden earth and every building in between.

"Want one?" Ehren held up what was left of the fruit after a moment of silence.

Axel eyed it suspiciously then nodded. "I should try new things if I am going to travel the galaxies."

Ehren exhumed another fruit for Axel and passed it over to him. The flesh was soft and squelched in his mouth, flooding his taste buds with the sweet flavour of the staple food of Earth: the Plear. He devoured it in a matter of moments and then grinned at his roommate.

"That was delicious!" He declared.

"Yeah," Ehren replied. "They are. Back home, it's just about the only native plant left. Most everything else is just grown in agrolabs."

"Really," Axel said. "I did not know that."

"Yeah." Ehren nodded. "Plear trees are everywhere in the desert though. People who can afford lab food think they're just for the poor, but I don't know. Maybe I used to think that, but now they just remind me of home. I really miss home, Axel."

"We all do." Axel reached over and patted him on the back. "I even miss the...dragons. It's worth it though. We're going to be detectives one day. Look at you. You're not even a certified member of the Action Squad yet, and you've already been on a real mission. You're saving the galaxies already! If only our boss wasn't letting the bad guy get away!"

"Yeah," Ehren murmured and offered his roommate a wry smile.

Ehren only wished it were the case. Robin, true to his word, had taken the blame for Feliu Viernes escape when it had been Ehren's carelessness that was the real culprit. He turned his attention away from Axel and rested his head against the window pane. It was cold outside, as it always was. Ehren closed his eyes and bit into his Plear in hopes that it wold somehow bring with it the feeling of warmth that had surrounded him in the Earth's desert climate, because with every new day, in every way, it was getting hard and harder to remember where he was from.
